Kensington's unique plumbing challenges

About 73 nights a year below freezing, when uninsulated crawlspace lines give out

The oldest blocks in town run plumbing decades older than the newer builds toward Great Neck Plaza

First frost typically lands around November 14

Seasonal timing

January averages a low of 27 degrees and February isn't far behind at 28, so the cold sits on a house for months rather than days.

Common questions

How much does a plumber cost?

It depends on the job and how bad the problem is. That is why the first step is a phone call. Describe the problem and get your free estimate on the phone, with upfront pricing.

Will I talk to a real person?

Yes, you will.

Do I need to fill out a form?

No forms and no waiting on emailed quotes. One phone call is all it takes.

Can I get help at night or on a weekend?

We have plumbers ready to help families in the community 24/7, but moment-to-moment availability depends on demand. Call to find out how soon we can service your home.

Should I wait to call?

You already know that plumbing problems don't go away on their own. And waiting just increases the risks to your house. Plumbers see this hesitation all the time. Instead of regretting not calling earlier, just make that 2-minute call now and get your free estimate.

People also ask

Why does my house smell faintly of sewer in winter?

Usually a dry trap in a fixture nobody uses, or a vent that isn't drawing properly. Frost can cap a vent stack at the roof, and once that happens the odor tends to show up on the top floor first.

Does old cast iron affect water quality?

Drain stacks carry waste out, so they don't touch what comes from the tap. Supply-side questions about older service lines are separate, and your water utility can tell you what material serves the street.

How do I know if the problem is my line or the street main?

If every drain in the house is slow at once, the trouble is at or beyond the stack, and if the street is backing up too then it's on the utility. A plumber can check the cleanout to place the blockage.

How long does a cast iron stack normally last?

Many run well past fifty years, and plenty in the oldest houses are older than that. Life depends on what has gone down the drain and how much moisture the outside of the pipe has taken on. Homes over toward Plandome Heights show the same thing.
