Seasonal timing

January lows sitting near 16 degrees are cold enough to frost a vent pipe shut at the roofline, which shows up as slow drains rather than as water on the floor.

Common questions

How much does a plumber cost?

It depends on the job and how bad the problem is. That is why the first step is a phone call. Describe the problem and get your free estimate on the phone, with upfront pricing.

Will I talk to a real person?

Yes, you will.

Do I need to fill out a form?

No forms and no waiting on emailed quotes. One phone call is all it takes.

Can I get help at night or on a weekend?

We have plumbers ready to help families in the community 24/7, but moment-to-moment availability depends on demand. Call to find out how soon we can service your home.

Should I wait to call?

You already know that plumbing problems don't go away on their own. And waiting just increases the risks to your house. Plumbers see this hesitation all the time. Instead of regretting not calling earlier, just make that 2-minute call now and get your free estimate.

People also ask

The tub drains slowly but the sink next to it is fine. Where do I start?

That points at the tub's own branch line rather than the main, since a shared main would slow both. Hair and soap build at the trap arm on tubs. If clearing the branch doesn't hold for long, the vent on that branch is the next thing.

A sink drains fine but smells. Is that the same dry-trap problem?

Often, though a sink that gets used regularly usually has water in its trap, so the smell may come from buildup on the pipe walls instead. A vent serving that branch can also be partly blocked. Which one it is decides the repair.

Do roots get into the sewer line here?

They do, especially where mature trees line an older street. Roots find the joints in clay and cast pipe and grow into the flow, and once they do the line will keep catching paper. Camera work is what settles whether the pipe is worth cleaning or replacing.

Is there anything to check before the cold sets in?

Look at what the plumbing has to survive rather than guessing: outside hose bibs drained, the main shutoff working, and any fixture that goes unused all winter run once in a while so its trap stays full. Homes toward Cambridge with unheated additions need the extra look.
