Highlands climate
by the numbers
Highlands's unique plumbing challenges
About 131 nights a year below freezing, when uninsulated crawlspace lines give out
The oldest blocks in town run plumbing decades older than the newer builds toward Highland Falls
First frost typically lands around October 30
Seasonal timing
January highs of about 35 degrees keep the roof frozen for weeks at a stretch, and a vent that narrows with frost is why a toilet starts bubbling in the middle of winter.
Common questions
It depends on the job and how bad the problem is. That is why the first step is a phone call. Describe the problem and get your free estimate on the phone, with upfront pricing.
Yes, you will.
No forms and no waiting on emailed quotes. One phone call is all it takes.
We have plumbers ready to help families in the community 24/7, but moment-to-moment availability depends on demand. Call to find out how soon we can service your home.
You already know that plumbing problems don't go away on their own. And waiting just increases the risks to your house. Plumbers see this hesitation all the time. Instead of regretting not calling earlier, just make that 2-minute call now and get your free estimate.
People also ask
Not usually, because the cause is either a partial blockage or a vent that has narrowed, and neither one improves on its own. What changes is how bad it sounds, which tracks with how much water is moving. Treat the noise as an early notice.
That's a venting problem. A big slug of water from the washer pulls air behind it, and if the vent can't supply that air the drain takes it through the nearest trap instead, which is the toilet. It gets worse as a vent partly blocks.
Air pressure in the stack is the reason. Upper fixtures sit closest to the vent, so a restriction near the roof shows up there first while the basement drains still behave. The pattern actually helps narrow down where the trouble is.
It can. Warm moist air rises up the stack and meets cold air at the roof, and the frost builds inward from the opening until the pipe is nearly closed. Homes on exposed ground toward Nelsonville see it more than sheltered ones do.
